Cal State LA is proud to offer California Promise, a pledge program established through California Senate Bill 412, authored by Senator Steve Glazer. The program's purpose is to promote graduation in four years for first-year students and two years for transfer students.
What is California Promise?

As a participant in the California Promise program, you will benefit in the following ways:
- Early registration to secure your seat in critical classes
- Enhanced advising to guide you through your degree roadmap
First-Year Student Pledge
Our California Promise program is designed to help incoming first-year students graduate in four years.
First-year students who meet the following eligibility criteria are welcome to participate:
- Incoming first-year student for the upcoming academic year
- Admitted to an eligible major upon entry:
- Communication (COMM BA)
- Computer Information Systems (CIS BS)
- Computer Science (CS BS)
- Communicative Disorders (COMD BA)
- Political Science (POLS BA)
As a participant in the program, you pledge to:
- Not change your major or add a second major, minor, or certificate program.
- Complete 15 degree-eligible units per semester.
- Complete 30 units per academic year (including winter, summer, and May intersession terms).
- Maintain a cumulative Cal State LA GPA and major GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Each term meet with your advisor before registration to review your degree plan and the courses you will take next term.
- Ensure that all holds are removed before your registration appointment.
- Register within 24 hours of your registration appointment and enroll in 15 units of required courses at those times when they are offered.
- Pay tuition and fees by the designated date.
California Promise eligiblity is determined:
- August 1 for Fall semesters
- December 1 for Spring semesters
Students are typically invited to pledge shortly after these dates and may continue to pledge through the end of add/drop. Add/drop dates are found on the Registrar's Dates and Deadlines page.
Transfer Student Pledge
Our California Promise program serves incoming transfer students who have an earned Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) from a California Community College in achieving their two-year graduation goals.
Transfer students who meet the following eligibility criteria are welcome to participate:
- Incoming transfer student for the upcoming semester (Fall or Spring)
- Earned California Community College Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) as verified by Enrollment Services
- Admitted to an eligible major upon entry:
- Communication (COMM BA)
- Computer Information Systems (CIS BS)
- Communicative Disorders (COMD BA)
- Political Science (POLS BA)
As a participant in the program, you pledge to:
- Not change your major or add a second major, minor, or certificate program.

Complete the CAP Pledge in GET
- Sign into the MyCalState LA portal and login to GET by selecting the GET icon under Quick Launch.
- Click the Student Center tile.
- Within Student Center, if you are CAP eligible, you will see California Promise listed in your To-Do List. Click the California Promise link to access the pledge and follow the instructions to complete the pledge.
