The Department of Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies (CLS) at Cal State LA is an interdisciplinary hub that centers the intersectional experiences and voices of Latinx, Chicanx, Indigenous, and diasporic communities. Our curriculum bridges fields including education, health sciences, history, literature, transnational, art, muxerista, jotería, and cultural studies—recognizing that issues of race, gender, sexuality, class, migration, age, and ability interweave to shape lived experiences. This cross-disciplinary approach equips students with the critical tools to navigate and challenge complex systems of power and prepares them to lead in fields as varied as education, law, healthcare, non-profit work, and government.
CLS faculty are committed to fostering an inclusive education that respects the multiple identities and histories our students bring. We believe in transformative learning that empowers students to critically engage with their communities and become lifelong advocates for justice. Through integrative learning, rigorous research, and diverse global perspectives, we aim to cultivate scholars and changemakers whose work reflects a commitment to equity, personal growth, and meaningful contributions to an interconnected world.
